The Jesus Calling Devotional Bible (New King James Version) contains, as its name suggests, 260 devotions covering a range of topics. The devotions, which appear alongside prayers, are taken from two of Sarah Young’s books, Jesus Calling and Jesus Lives.
Missionary Sarah Young had been journaling her prayers for years when she began listening for what Jesus was saying to her within the words of Scripture. Thus each devotion is written from Jesus’ point of view – as though He were speaking directly to the reader. This is somewhat unusual; however, each devotional text is grounded in Scripture and includes Scripture references after each message. It certainly makes for intimate, personal reading.
In addition to the prayers and devotions, there are hundreds of inspiring Scriptures highlighted throughout the two-colour text. There is, of course, an index to the devotions. Furthermore, the Bible contains a ribbon marker as well as a presentation page. The Jesus Calling Devotional Bible would certainly make a beautiful gift. A very high quality Bible, it comes with a lifetime guarantee on that quality.
The typeface and print are fairly large, making the text easy to read – even without my glasses on. My only criticism is that on the double pages containing prayer and devotional the Bible verse information is not found in the header as on other pages but rather in the middle of the page. This makes looking for a particular verse rather difficult. But then again, perhaps it just needs some getting used to. Still, I would have preferred to find the verse information at the top of the page.
